Patents and Trademarks in the University Libraries

In 2000, the University Libraries were designated by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as a patent and trademark depository. We are one of 80 such depositories in the nation and territories.

The Patent and Trademark Depository collection and the USPTO workstation are located on the 2nd floor in the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library. The collections are available for anyone to use. You do not have to be a Wright State University student, faculty or staff member to use these collections. In addition to the patents and trademarks themselves, the library contains all of the USPTO publications needed to research the patents and trademarks in the collection.

Reference Services offered at the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library

Recognizing that intellectual property research is a complex endeavor with important legal and financial implications, our services are designed to support the individual or corporate/legal researcher's efforts to conduct self-directed and preliminary research.

Library staff cannot offer legal advice, conduct searches, assist in writing applications, guarantee completeness of searches, or advise on ideas. All final research, regarding intellectual property determinations, should be done in consultation with proper intellectual property legal professionals.

The Reference staff will make every effort to protect the confidentiality and privacy of researchers.

Staff will:

  • Provide instruction in using the various intellectual property and non-intellectual property databases available to the researcher in the libraries
  • Help the researcher with the manuals, guides and non-electronic search tools
  • Assist in retrieving and printing any material found in your research
  • Serve as the contact point for expertise at the United States Patent and Trademark Office

Photocopying and Printing

Workstation printers and photocopiers are available in the libraries. The in-house cost for printing is 6 cents per page. Color copying is not available in the University Libraries.
