Media

Below are a few resources to help with copyright compliance when using media in papers, presentations, and the classroom (whether it is traditional, web enhanced, or online).

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 - was signed into law in 1998 and addresses a variety of issues regarding copyright and topics such as online service providers, computer programs and maintenance, distance education, web casting, and vessel hulls. This legislation also implements two 1996 World Intellectual Property Organization treaties - the WIPO Copyright Treaty and the WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty.

The Proposal for Fair Use Guidelines for Educational Multimedia (1996) contains information on the principles for using portions of copyrighted works in multimedia presentations. An excellent summary of this can be found in the PBS video database at http://pbsvideodb.pbs.org/about/fair_use.asp
