| James Chew was a prominent businessman and civic leader in Greene County, Ohio. His papers consist primarily of business records from three Miami Valley newspapers, the Xenia Gazette, the Piqua Daily Call, and the Middletown Journal, which he owned and published. Records include balance sheets, bank statements, payroll reports, investment reports, profit and loss statements, circulation averages, and statistics. These interests included the Moraine Development Company, Gem City Realty, Reliable Insurance Company, the Citizen's Lighting Company (later DP & L), the Mead Engine Company, and the Dayton Breweries Company. | The principle business of the Dayton Manufacturing Company was the manufacture of railway car hardware, although the company later branched out into electric and oil headlamps and brassworks. Records in this collection include quarterly and annual reports, agreements and contracts with outside companies, legal documents concerning ownership and royalties from patents, extensive financial records which provide information about the daily operating activities of the company, and files containing correspondence with firms doing business with the Dayton Manufacturing Company. Also included are files which document the Metal Polisher's Union strike of 1900-1901. These records contain names and addresses of union members, police-blotters with brief accounts of union demonstrations, and newspaper clippings. Finding aid available. |
